Yes, Kaliviani is the official starting point of the road to Balos Beach. It is an 8km unpaved route that takes approximately 30 minutes to drive.
A personal tip from Ioannis: Based on our experience over the last 30 years, all of our guests drive to Balos Beach using their rental cars—any car type—without any issues at all. As long as you drive slowly and carefully, the chance of encountering a problem is practically zero. From the parking area at the end of the road, a scenic 20-minute hike rewards you with the most iconic, panoramic view of the lagoon!
The best time to visit is early in the morning, ideally arriving at the parking area by 9:00 AM.
Why we recommend this: By starting early from our hotel, you will reach the lagoon before the large ferry boats arrive from Kissamos (around 11:30 AM). This gives you at least 2-3 hours to enjoy the tranquility, find the best spot on the beach, and take photos without the crowds. Plus, you will avoid hiking back up during the hottest part of the afternoon!
